About Helen Cole Krause
Helen Krause (1931-2013) devoted her professional life to sharing the joy of music through teaching, conducting, performing, and celebrating it…all with her unique wit and wisdom. In her over 30 year professional career, she led choruses, bands, glee clubs, elementary music, church choirs and more…teaching at all levels of music education in Virginia, Vermont, and North Carolina. Her father, the late D.C. Cole (often called “The Music Man of Rutherford County”) instilled in Helen a love for music at an early age. This led to her earning bachelors and masters degrees in General Music and Music Education from Appalachian State University.
A native and long-time resident of Rutherford County (NC), Helen devoted the largest part of her teaching career to the former Shelby (NC) City School System, first from 1956 – 1958 as a Music Consultant, then from 1967 – 1990 in choral music and general music classes at Shelby Middle School and Shelby High School. She served as a special guest clinician and adjudicator for numerous music festivals and was Zone Coordinator for the Mars Hill University Choral Festival for over 30 years. During her long and successful life and career, Helen Krause inspired and influenced countless lives to experience the joy of music, and to share that joy with those around them.
