The Power of Music Endowment was established and permanently endowed at Mars Hill University in 2026 by Mark Cabaniss to reflect his belief in the enduring ability of music to positively impact lives, strengthen communities, and inspire future generations.

Created in memory of two beloved Mars Hill music educators – Dr. Wayne Pressley and Mr. Ray Babelay – the Endowment supports student learning, artistic growth, mentorship, rewards achievement, and offers transformational musical experiences for Mars Hill students pursuing their own paths in music and the performing arts.

Dr. Pressley, longtime Chair of the Mars Hill Music Department, served not only as Mark’s conducting professor and trumpet instructor, but also as a trusted adviser whose leadership and encouragement helped shape generations of musicians. Mr. Babelay likewise left a profound impression through his professionalism, joyful spirit, and unwavering commitment to students and ensemble excellence.

In addition to supporting music students and the broader work of the Music Department, the Endowment also established:

• The Wayne Pressley Stage at Moore Auditorium
• The Ray Babelay Music Award
• The Mark Cabaniss Music Masterclass Series

With this Endowment, the performance stage in the storied Moore Auditorium on the campus of MHU was named in memory of Dr. Pressley, while a new music award in memory of Mr. Babelay is now given annually to a deserving MHU music major. The Mark Cabaniss Music Masterclass Series brings accomplished artists, educators, and music industry professionals to the Mars Hill University campus to provide students with inspiration, practical insight, mentorship, and real-world perspectives on building meaningful lives and careers in music.

The Power of Music Endowment was created with the hope that future generations of Mars Hill students will continue to experience the same encouragement, opportunity, discipline, and sense of belonging that have long distinguished the University’s music program.
